How to Book KTX and Intercity Travel in Korea

Booking travel between Korean cities is not only about finding the fastest train or bus.

The more important question is whether the departure station and arrival point work well for your actual journey.

Seoul has several train stations and long-distance bus terminals. Regional cities may also have more than one station or terminal, and some are located away from the city center, accommodation areas or major attractions.

Before booking, compare the complete route:

Accommodation → departure station or terminal → train or bus → arrival station or terminal → final destination

KTX may have the shortest travel time between cities. A direct bus, however, may be more efficient if it leaves closer to your accommodation or arrives nearer to your hotel or attraction.

For travelers with limited time, the best option is usually the one that makes the entire journey easier.

Compare the Full Journey

Do not compare only the time shown between two stations or terminals.

Check:

Time from your accommodation to the departure point
Number of subway or bus transfers
Train or bus travel time
Time from the arrival point to the final destination
Walking distance
Ticket price
Luggage convenience
Expected road traffic

A train may save time between cities but require additional transfers at both ends. A bus may take longer on the highway but provide a direct connection to the area you need.

Use a Korean map app to compare the complete route for the approximate date and time of travel. Road conditions can affect buses, especially on weekends, public holidays and major travel periods.

Booking KTX After the 2026 Integration

KTX and SRT previously used separate booking systems. For trains operating from September 1, 2026, reservations are handled through the integrated KORAIL system.

Tickets for trains operating from September 1 went on sale through the integrated system on August 5, 2026.

How to Book a Train Ticket

The exact menu names may change, but the booking process is straightforward.

Open the official KORAIL booking page or KORAIL+.
Enter the departure station.
Enter the arrival station.
Select the travel date and number of passengers.
Compare the available trains.
Confirm both station names.
Select the train and seat.
Enter the passenger and payment information.
Complete the payment.
Save the ticket and reservation details.

KORAIL generally allows regular tickets to be purchased up to one month before departure. Different sales periods may apply during major Korean holidays, timetable changes or special travel periods.

If no train appears for a future date, check whether reservations have opened before assuming that every service is sold out.

Confirm the Exact Train Stations

Do not enter “Seoul” and assume that every train leaves from Seoul Station.

Common departure stations in and around Seoul include:

Seoul Station
Yongsan Station
Cheongnyangni Station
Suseo Station
Gwangmyeong Station

These stations are not interchangeable.

The most efficient station depends on:

Your accommodation
The rail line
Your destination
The departure time
Local transport connections

Suseo may be convenient from parts of Gangnam and southeastern Seoul. Gwangmyeong may appear as a useful alternative in the timetable, but it is outside Seoul and can require additional travel.

Search the complete station name in a Korean map app before paying.

At the other end of the journey, check the route from the arrival station to your accommodation or attraction. A station carrying the city’s name may still be outside the traditional center or require another local bus or taxi.

When a Bus May Be More Efficient

Express and intercity buses reach many destinations that do not have a convenient rail connection.

A bus may be the better option when:

The destination has no nearby train station
The train requires one or more transfers
A direct bus arrives near the city center
The terminal is closer to the hotel or attraction
The departure terminal is easier to reach
The bus schedule fits the itinerary better

The main trade-off is that highway traffic can affect the arrival time.

Express and Intercity Buses Use Different Systems

Korea has two main types of long-distance buses.

Express bus

Express buses generally connect major cities using expressways with few or no intermediate city stops.

Intercity buses serve a wider range of regional cities and may stop at intermediate terminals.

Official booking sites:

A route may appear on TxBus but not Bustago, or on Bustago but not TxBus. Check both if an intercity route does not appear on the first site.

Some routes can be searched online but may only be available for purchase at the terminal.

Confirm the Exact Bus Terminals

Seoul has several long-distance bus terminals.

The main terminals include:

Seoul Express Bus Terminal
Central City Terminal
Dong Seoul Terminal
Seoul Nambu Terminal

Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Central City use the same subway station area but serve different route groups and boarding areas. Dong Seoul Terminal and Seoul Nambu Terminal are located in other parts of the city.

Do not search only for “Seoul bus terminal.” Use the complete terminal name shown on the reservation.

The arrival terminal also needs to be checked carefully. A regional city may have:

Separate express and intercity terminals
More than one terminal in different districts
A combined terminal
A terminal named after a neighborhood
Different departure and return terminals

Copy the complete terminal name into a Korean map app and check its location relative to your accommodation or attraction.

If an International Card Does Not Work

An English-language booking page does not mean that every foreign-issued card will always complete payment successfully.

Payment can depend on:

Card issuer
International payment settings
Card authentication
Booking platform
Route or ticket type

If payment fails:

Check whether overseas online payments are enabled.
Confirm the card and billing information.
Try another supported card.
For intercity buses, check the other official booking site.
Purchase the ticket at the station or terminal.

The Korea Tourism Organization confirms that train and long-distance bus tickets can also be purchased at station or terminal ticket offices and machines.

Buying on the day is a practical backup, but the preferred departure may already be full. Keep another departure time or transport option in mind.

International booking partners may offer additional payment methods, but their available routes, prices and cancellation policies can differ. Confirm the seller, final price and ticket conditions before paying.

On the Travel Day

Train

Go to the exact departure station.
Check the train number and departure time.
Confirm the platform on the station display.
Find the correct carriage and seat.
Keep the ticket available during the journey.

Bus

Go to the exact terminal.
Check the destination and departure time.
Confirm the boarding platform on the terminal display.
Check whether the reservation must be exchanged for a paper ticket.
Confirm the bus and seat before boarding.

The Korea Tourism Organization states that long-distance bus boarding generally begins approximately 5 to 10 minutes before departure. Arrive earlier if you need to collect a ticket, find an unfamiliar terminal or store luggage.

If Your Preferred Ticket Is Sold Out

Another departure time
Another suitable departure station
A regular train instead of KTX
An express or intercity bus
A nearby arrival station or terminal
A different travel date

During major Korean holidays, special reservation schedules may replace the usual sales period. Check the official operator’s current notices.

Changes and Cancellations

Use the same platform that issued the ticket.

Final Thoughts

The fastest train is not automatically the most efficient choice.

Compare the journey from your accommodation to the final hotel, attraction or meeting point. Then confirm the complete names of the departure and arrival stations or terminals before paying.

That short check can save more travel time than choosing the fastest vehicle between two cities.
