Walking even a short distance can be tiring during Korea’s hot and humid summer. Shade cannot prevent heat-related illness, but reducing direct sun exposure may make the walk from a subway station or bus stop a little easier.
One tool some people in Korea use for this purpose is Geuneulro (그늘로). The app compares the shortest route with a route expected to have more shade.

What Does Geuneulro Do?
Geuneulro predicts shade using the expected walking time, the position of the sun and available building and street-tree data.
After searching for a destination, you can compare:
- the shortest and shade-first routes;
- estimated shaded and sun-exposed sections;
- walking and public transportation options; and
- stairs, crossings and underground passages along the route.
The prediction changes depending on the time of day. A street shaded by a building in the morning may be exposed to direct sunlight in the afternoon. Set the departure time to when you actually expect to walk.
The app can also suggest which side of a bus may receive less sunlight based on the direction of travel and the sun’s position.
How to Use It on an iPhone

- Enter your starting point and destination.
- Set your expected departure time.
- Compare the shortest route with the shade-first option.
- Check the extra walking time, stairs and crossings before choosing.
The iPhone app requires iOS 16.4 or later. It supports Korean, English, Japanese, Spanish, French and Traditional Chinese.
Is Geuneulro Available on Android?
As of August 11, 2026, a standalone Android app was still listed as forthcoming on the developer’s website.
Android users can try Geuneulro through the Toss app, but this may be less convenient for international visitors who do not already use Toss. Check the official Geuneulro website for the latest availability before your trip.
Does It Work Outside Seoul?
Official information does not describe Geuneulro as a Seoul-only service.
However, the amount of available data can differ by location. Street-tree shade is included only in areas where suitable public tree data is available. Building, tree and pedestrian-route information may therefore be more detailed in some places than in others.
When using the app outside Seoul—or anywhere unfamiliar—compare its route with the actual street conditions.
What the App Cannot Guarantee
Geuneulro predicts shade rather than observing every street in real time. The result may differ from what you find because of:
- new or demolished buildings;
- missing or outdated tree data;
- seasonal changes in leaves;
- construction and temporary road closures;
- clouds and changing weather; or
- a later-than-planned departure.
Public transportation results do not include real-time arrival information. Check station displays or another local transit service for current bus and train times.
Walking-only searches are limited to destinations within 5 km. Most importantly, follow traffic signals, road signs and on-site instructions before the suggested map route.
A Quick Summer Safety Reminder
A shaded route can reduce direct sunlight, but it does not make extreme heat safe.
Check the weather and heatwave alerts before leaving, carry water and avoid a long walk during the hottest part of the day when possible. Plan a cooling stop at a subway station, convenience store, café or shopping center.
If you feel dizzy, nauseated, confused or unusually weak, stop walking and move somewhere cool. Call 119 if someone loses consciousness or develops severe symptoms.

Geuneulro is simply one more option for planning a summer walk in Korea. It may not match every street perfectly, but checking whether a slightly longer route offers more shade can still be useful before stepping outside.
