Arriving in Korea is usually straightforward when the important checks have been completed before departure.
Before flying, confirm:
- whether you need a visa
- whether K-ETA applies to your passport
- whether you need an e-Arrival Card
- whether health or customs declarations apply
- how you will travel from the airport
- whether you have your accommodation address offline
This guide uses Incheon International Airport as its main example. Other Korean airports follow a similar entry process, but transport services and operating hours are different.
The “first 90 minutes” is not a deadline. Immigration, baggage and airport congestion may take longer. It simply refers to the first decisions to make after landing.

1. Check Your Entry Requirements
Korea’s entry requirements depend on your passport, purpose of travel and length of stay.
Advice written for another nationality may not apply to you.
Do you need a visa?
Foreign visitors need either:
- a valid Korean visa, or
- eligibility to enter Korea without a visa
Use the official Korea Visa Portal to search by nationality, purpose and length of stay. If the result is unclear, contact the Korean embassy or consulate responsible for your country.
If you need a visa, check that:
- it is valid on your arrival date
- it matches your purpose of travel
- it allows the required number of entries
- your planned stay is within the permitted period
Tourism, business meetings, study and employment may require different entry status.
Do you need K-ETA?
K-ETA is an electronic travel authorization for eligible visa-free visitors. It is not a visa, and approval does not guarantee entry.
Some countries and regions are temporarily exempt from K-ETA until December 31, 2026. The exemption does not cover every visa-free traveler.
Check your passport on the official K-ETA website.

A valid K-ETA normally removes the need to submit an arrival card. Travelers covered by the temporary exemption may still apply for K-ETA voluntarily, but the application fee applies.
Use only the official k-eta.go.kr website. Similar-looking commercial websites may charge additional service fees.
Do you need an e-Arrival Card?
The e-Arrival Card is separate from K-ETA.
Foreign nationals generally need an arrival declaration unless they belong to an exempt category. Exemptions include registered residents, permanent residents, valid K-ETA holders and certain other specified travelers.
Use the eligibility navigator on the official Korea e-Arrival Card website instead of guessing.
The e-Arrival Card:
- is free
- is submitted online
- can be completed from three days before arrival, based on Korean Standard Time
- requires passport, flight and accommodation information
- must be submitted again if it expires before entry

Save the submission details somewhere accessible without mobile data. The official website ends in e-arrivalcard.go.kr and does not charge a submission fee.
2. Check Health and Customs Declarations
Q-CODE
Q-CODE is not required for every traveler.
Travelers who visited or transited through a designated strict quarantine inspection area may need to submit Q-CODE or a Health Declaration Form. For other designated quarantine areas, the requirement can depend on symptoms.
The affected countries and regions can change. Check the most recent notice on the official Q-CODE announcements page.
If Q-CODE applies to you, information can be entered from seven days before arrival.
Do not complete it only because an old travel guide says that every passenger needs it. Check your recent travel and transit history against the current official list.
Customs
Customs requirements depend on what you bring into Korea.
Check the official Incheon Airport customs guide if you are carrying:
- goods above the duty-free allowance
- alcohol, tobacco or perfume above the separate allowance
- food, agricultural or animal products
- controlled or restricted medicine
- commercial goods
- separately shipped or unaccompanied baggage
- restricted equipment
- protected animal or plant products
Travelers entering Korea with more than the equivalent of USD 10,000 in cash, checks or other specified means of payment must declare it. The Korea Customs Service currency guide explains this requirement.
If you have declarable goods, use the Goods to Declare channel. If you have nothing to declare, follow the Nothing to Declare signs.
Ask a customs officer when uncertain.
3. Save Essential Information Offline
Do not rely only on links that require mobile data.
Accommodation
Save:
- full accommodation name
- Korean address
- English address
- telephone number
- check-in time
- late-arrival instructions
- booking confirmation
- host or front desk contact method
The Korean address is particularly useful for taxi drivers, transport staff and map searches.
Flight
Save:
- flight number
- scheduled arrival time
- arrival terminal
- airline contact details
Terminal assignments can change because of airline operations or codeshare flights. Confirm the terminal through your airline or the Incheon Airport arrival guide.
Documents
Keep these accessible:
- passport
- visa, if required
- K-ETA approval, if applicable
- e-Arrival Card details, if required
- Q-CODE, if required
- return or onward travel details
- accommodation confirmation
- travel insurance details
- necessary prescription or medical documents
Digital copies are useful, but keep your passport and required original documents with you.
4. Research Your Airport Transport
Prepare one preferred route and one backup route before flying.
Base the choice on:
- final destination
- actual arrival time
- last train or bus
- arrival terminal
- luggage
- number of travelers
- transfers and walking distance
- accepted payment method
- possible flight delay
- road traffic
For each route, save:
- service or route number
- ticket location
- terminal boarding point
- departures around your arrival
- final departure of the day
- correct stop
- route from the stop to your accommodation
- estimated fare
- payment method
Check the information again close to departure. Airport transport schedules can change.

The fastest route on a map is not always the easiest. A direct bus may be more comfortable than a train followed by several transfers.

Plan for a late arrival
Do not compare the last departure only with the scheduled landing time. Allow time for walking, immigration, baggage and customs.
Prepare a backup such as:
- a late-night airport bus
- an official airport taxi
- a nearby airport hotel
- late-arrival instructions from your accommodation

5. Follow the Arrival Signs
The basic route is:
Aircraft → Quarantine if required → Immigration → Baggage Claim → Customs → Arrival Hall
Passengers arriving at an Incheon Airport concourse may first need to take the airport shuttle train to the terminal.
Once you enter the public arrival hall, focus on three things:
- phone connection
- transport
- the payment method needed for that transport
6. What to Handle at the Airport
Connect your phone
If you prepared an eSIM or roaming plan, connect it before spending time at a carrier counter.
If you still need mobile service, Incheon Airport has roaming centers for SIM cards and portable Wi-Fi. Some carrier counters operate 24 hours, but locations and hours vary. Check the airport’s current information and service directory.
Before leaving, confirm that you can access:
- your accommodation address
- your saved route
- messages from your host
- maps or transport information
Airport Wi-Fi can provide temporary access if your mobile service is not ready.
Confirm your transport
Recheck your route using the actual time after reaching the arrival hall.
Confirm:
- whether the service is still operating
- the correct ticket or payment method
- the terminal stop or platform
- the correct destination stop
- the final route to your accommodation
Use official ticket counters, machines, information desks and marked taxi stands. Do not follow an unsolicited private driver.
Decide whether you need cash or Tmoney
Your need for Korean won depends on your selected transport.

Payment rules can vary by machine and product. If your first journey does not require Tmoney, you can buy it later.
Currency exchanges and ATMs are available at the airport. You do not need to exchange a large amount simply because you have arrived. Check what your transport accepts and prepare the amount you need.
7. Before Leaving the Airport
Confirm:
- My phone can access maps and messages.
- I have my accommodation’s Korean address.
- I know the correct transport and boarding point.
- I have the required ticket, card or payment method.
- My accommodation knows if I will arrive late.
Everything else can wait.
Large currency exchanges, travel-pass comparisons, app registrations and detailed itinerary changes can be handled later.
